연아 마틴 상원 의원은 개천절을 맞이해 다음과 같은 성명서를 발표했다:

“오늘은 대한민국의 역사와 시작을 축하하는 날인 개천절입니다.

“이 특별한 날, 우리 선조들의 회복력과 용감한 정신을 캐나다 한인 사회와 전 세계 한인들과 함께 축하하고 싶습니다. 개천절은 하늘이 열린 날이라는 뜻으로 한민족 최초의 국가인 고조선의 건국을 기념하기 위한 날입니다.

“2023년은 캐나다 한국 수교 60주년과 한국전 정전 70주년을 기념하는 역사적인 해입니다. 우리는 일제 강점기와 한국전을 이겨내고 오늘의 번영을 이루어낸 역사에 자부심을 가져야 합니다. 또한 대한민국의 오늘의 역동적인 G20 국가로 성장할 수 있었던 기반을 마련한 독립운동가들과 한국전 참전 용사들의 노력과 희생에 감사해야 합니다.

“캐나다 상원을 대표해, 이 중요한 날을 기념하는 모든 분들이 즐거운 개천절 보내시기 바랍니다!”

THE HONOURABLE YONAH MARTIN’S MESSAGE ON THE OCCASION OF NATIONAL FOUNDATION DAY

On the occasion of Gaecheonjeol, National Foundation Day, Senator Yonah Martin has released the following statement:

“Today is Gaecheonjeol (National Foundation Day), a day that celebrates the origin and history of Korea.

“On this special day, I would like to celebrate with the national Korean Canadian community and people of Korean descent around the world, the resilient and courageous spirit of our ancestors.  Gaecheonjeol, meaning ‘the day when the sky opened’, is a day to commemorate the founding of Gojoseon, the first nation of the Korean people. 

“2023 is a historic year which marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Korea and the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. We should be proud of our history of overcoming Japanese colonial rule and the devastating Korean War and achieving today's prosperity. We should also acknowledge the patriots of the independence movement and the Korean War veterans whose efforts and sacrifices have built the foundation upon which Korea has flourished and become the dynamic G20 nation of today.

“On behalf of the Senate of Canada, happy Gaecheonjeol to everyone celebrating this important day!”
