Writing the Word: the Dead Sea Scrolls and The Saint John’s Bible
January 28, 7:30 pm | Fr. Michael J. McGivney Hall
Free public lecture!Dr. Eileen Schuller, Professor, McMaster University
One of the world’s foremost scholars on the Dead Sea Scrolls, Dr. Schuller will discuss the writing and composition of the Dead Sea Scrolls in view of the handwritten presentation of The Saint John's Bible. The Saint John's Bible is a unique contemporary presentation of the Bible in a hand-written text, illustrated with art rooted in the long medieval tradition of manuscript illumination but expressive of our modern world. The Dead Sea Scrolls are fragmentary pieces of parchment, discovered some 60 years ago, that preserve the earliest copies of the Old Testament, along with many previously unknown religious texts from a pious Jewish sect from the time of Jesus. Both The Saint John's Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls illustrate what it means to make the Word of God living and meaningful in diverse cultures and circumstances across the ages.A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Eileen Schuller is a professor of religious studies at McMaster University in Hamilton. She has been involved with the publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls since 1980, editing manuscripts of prayers, psalms and hymns, including the new edition of the The Hodayot (Thanksgiving Psalms): A Study Edition of 1QHa published by the Society of Biblical Literature in 2012. She is co-editor of 1QHodayota and other documents from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the author of The Dead Sea Scrolls: What Have We Learned? (Westminster John Knox, 2006), and the co-editor of The Dead Sea Scrolls: Transmission of Traditions, Production of Texts (Brill, 2010). Dr. Schuller also writes extensively about the role of women in the Old Testament and in the community that produced the Dead Sea Scrolls.
